preserving nature

METRO recently ensured a hearty group of 150 Eastern Redbuds in the city’s historic, 82-acre MacGregor Park will continue to serve the community as living reminders of strength and will—albeit in a slightly different location. The trees were originally planted along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in 2005. To make way for light rail, the trees were gently moved to another area of the park where they will continue to provide beauty and shade to visitors for years to come.

“We are very proud of MacGregor Park. We want it to be beautiful, and METRO is doing great things for the park,” said Katie Murray, president, Friends of MacGregor Park.

This effort is part of METRO’s tree mitigation program along the rail lines that are under construction. METRO works with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and affected communities to develop a plan for tree removal and replanting or replacement with trees of comparable size and species, helping to preserve the aesthetic character of the neighborhoods where light rail is located.
