Miguel Martinez is passionate about the food of his hometown near Acapulco, Mexico. Before becoming a professional cook 13 years ago, he cooked mostly for friends and family, serving the dishes that reminded him of home.
In 2002, Miguel decided it was time to share his love of cooking with his community and opened Las Cabamas—now a well-known neighborhood eatery.
His Caldo de Mariscos, a traditional seafood stew, is a local favorite. But there is a lot more on the menu worth trying—like the Wilotas Diabla, Miguel’s version of a classic Mexican dish featuring spicy quail.
As a resident of Houston’s North Side for more than 10 years, Miguel is hopeful for the changes light rail will bring to the area.
“Business has slowed a little during construction. But once it’s finished, I know it will be good for business,” Martinez said recently. “In the meantime, come to Las Cabamas and try my Caldo de Mariscos. You’ll be glad you did.”
While at Las Cabamas, pay a visit to some of the other
businesses sharing the intersection of Fulton and Cavalcade: Quik Food Store, V&X Beauty Salon, Nails Plus and Lucrecia Jasmony’s State Farm storefront.
